As an international student at NSCC, you must notify the International Programs office that you intend to graduate. Please complete the Quarter Plan Request for the quarter you intend to graduate. Your immigration records must be updated to reflect the quarter you will graduate.
After completing your studies at NSCC, as an F-1 student you have five immigration options:
1. Leave the United States: Depart the U.S. within 60 days after graduation or completion of studies. If you choose this option you have 60 days to leave the U.S. from the last day you attend classes at NSCC. Please inform the IP office of your intent and give us a copy of your plane reservation.
Please note that during this time you cannot visit Canada and return to the U.S. on your F-1 visa.
2. Stay at NSCC: Continue your studies at NSCC with F-1 status by changing majors or level of study. If you choose this option, please meet with an International Student Advisor at least 30 days prior to the end of the quarter. You will need to provide a new bank statement before your I-20 can be updated.
3. Transfer: If you plan to transfer to another school, you must complete the transfer process within 60 days. If you choose this option, please complete the SEVIS Release/Transfer Out Form and turn it in to the IP office within 60 days from the last day you attend classes at NSCC. You must begin classes at your new school at their next available start date.
Please note that if you leave the U.S. between finishing your last class and starting at your new school you can only enter the U.S. on your new school’s I-20.
4. OPT: Apply for Optional Practical Training before graduation. Post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows you to accept employment directly related to your academic major. Students in English Language programs are not eligible for practical training. While OPT restricts the kind of work you do, it does not restrict you to a particular job or location – you can go anywhere in the country. Plan ahead! It may take at least 3-4 months to get an approval from the U.S.C.I.S. Service Center.
Come meet with an International Student Advisor to pick up an OPT handout. Please read it thoroughly and fill out your OPT application documents. After completing all OPT application requirements, schedule another appointment with an International Student Advisor. At your meeting the advisor will review your OPT application materials, enrollment, and status. If you are eligible, the advisor will recommend OPT via SEVIS and issue another Form I-20 noting OPT. Immigration must receive your OPT application before the last day of your graduation quarter. We recommend submitting your OPT application near the beginning of your graduation quarter.
5. Change of Status: Apply for a Change of Status to another nonimmigrant classification within 60 days after graduation. If you choose this option, please give the IP office a copy of your Change of Status application and your Change of Status approval. The IP office does not offer advising regarding Change of Status applications from an F-1 visa to any other nonimmigrant classification.
If you have any questions please ask an International Student Advisor. We are happy to help!
