When you Arrive
Culture Shock

Most new students find the first few days a time of excitement, change and adjustment. You may experience one of four phases as you study at NSCC:

  • Honeymoon: Everything is new and different. You love it and are having a wonderful time
  • Shock: You start noticing the differences between your country and USA. You start missing what you had in your country. You didn't think it would be this different
  • Negotiation: You start to face the problems you experience and try to accommodate them into your lifestyle
  • Acceptance: You accept and welcome the changes in this new environment.

Many international students experience culture shock while they are here. If you feel overwhelmed, come to the International Programs office.
